This is when your blood sugar (glucose) level drops too a very low value. Since the glucose is the "fuel", you will simply run out of fuel. The shortage of "fuel" for the brain has a medical term: neuroglycopenia.Insulin - how it is connected to diabetiesInsulin will help your cells absorb the glucose. Insulin is produced by your pancreas. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes type 2 (diabeties), it means that your pancreas does not produce enough insulin and although the glucose is delivered, the cells don't have the capacity to absorb it. As a result, much of the sugar is simply just passing through your body and will end up in the urin (diabetes mellicus is the latin name for the disease diabeties and mellicus literally means "honey smelling" which is exactly what happens with your urin if it gets overloaded with glucose). Your body can store glucose, if the intake of it is more than you need. It will then be stored in your muscles and also in the liver as glycogen. When your body needs more glucose again, typically between the meals and/or when exercising - it can use glucose from the storage. Your body will try to keep the blood glucose level constant by issuing a hormone, glucagon, telling the liver to start breaking down glycogen. With diabetes though, there may be a problem with the glucagon responding to hypoglycemia and this makes it difficult for the body to maintain a constand blood glucose level if you have diabeties. |
